From Dubrovnik, we set off early for a springtime day trip to Kravice Waterfalls, knowing their raw beauty might soon give way to an aquapark makeover. The drive through the rolling hills of Herzegovina gave way to the roar of the falls long before we saw them — a curtain of white water spilling into emerald pools, framed by willows just beginning to leaf out. In April, the river runs high and the cascades are at their fullest, sending cool mist into the air and drawing rainbows in the sunlight. We picnicked on the grassy banks, toes in the spray, grateful to catch Kravice at its most unspoiled — a fleeting glimpse of nature’s power and calm before change comes.
