When I visited Sremski Karlovci in Serbia as part of a Sharing One Language teacher's retreat, I found myself enchanted by the town’s charm and history. Wandering through its picturesque streets, I discovered beautiful architecture and lively squares with inviting cafes and restaurants serving delicious Serbian cuisine. The rich cultural heritage came alive in the many museums and galleries, and the tranquil ambiance of the Danube River provided perfect moments of reflection. A visit to the Peace Chapel, a historic site of significant diplomatic importance, added depth to my exploration. The town is also home to Karlovačka Gimnazija, Serbia’s first and finest local language teaching grammar school, a unique institution in Europe that stands as a testament to the town’s educational prowess. The highlight was visiting the impressive wine cellars, where I savored local wines and learned about the region's winemaking traditions. Sremski Karlovci offered me a truly memorable experience, blending history, culture, and natural beauty.
